Sub-Zero refrigeration, diagnosed on the readings

Columns, side-by-sides, under-counter drawers, ice makers and wine storage — serviced in the cabinetry they were built into. Temperatures taken with a probe, pressures read off gauges, boards measured at the terminals, and a single price before anything is ordered.

  • Flat $95 service call, credited against the repair once you approve it
  • Phone answered 24/7; vans out 8:00 am – 8:00 pm, seven days
  • Built-in and integrated refrigeration only — that is the whole book of work

Why built-in refrigeration is its own trade

A column is not a big refrigerator

A Sub-Zero column, drawer or side-by-side is designed to be lived with for twenty years and serviced in place. Two sealed systems instead of one, an evaporator per compartment, a control board that talks to both, and a cabinet built flush into joinery that was measured to the millimetre. None of that behaves like a freestanding refrigerator, and none of it forgives a guess.

That is why a call here starts with readings rather than parts. Compartment temperatures taken with a probe instead of read off the display. Suction and discharge pressures on the gauges before anyone says the word compressor. Board voltages measured at the terminals. A defrost circuit proven, not assumed. It is slower at the start of the visit and considerably faster by the end of it.

The South Shore adds its own chapter. Salt air reaches condenser coils in Cohasset and Hull in a way it never does inland, and a great many kitchens here are additions grafted onto old frames, which leaves almost no clearance behind a panelled unit. Both change how the work is planned before the van leaves.

  • 5 out of 5

Cubes were coming off the mould hollow and half formed. The fill valve was weak and the inlet screen was choked with sediment off our line. He fitted a new valve, flushed the run, and the ice has been clear since.

Long gravel drive and a mudroom entrance, and he still got the unit out without marking the floor. A control board had died during the March storm outage. Ordered, fitted three days later, fine ever since.

    Sandra K. Norwell

Boxed in on three sides in a small kitchen, which is apparently why it ran warm. He opened up the venting at the base, cleaned the coil and fitted a fan. Steady since.

Asked on the phone

Before you book

The six questions that come up most often, answered the way they get answered when someone rings.

What does the $95 service call cover?

The visit and the full diagnosis: temperatures taken at the compartment, the sealed system checked on gauges where the symptom points that way, controls and sensors measured, and a plain explanation of what is wrong. If you approve the repair, the $95 comes off the total. If you decide against it, you have paid for a diagnosis and you owe nothing further.

Can you work on a unit that is built into cabinetry?

Yes — almost everything here is. Most work happens through the toe grille and the upper service panel with the unit in place. Where a cabinet genuinely has to come forward, we say so before anything moves, and we plan the route out through the room with you rather than discovering the problem halfway.

My fresh food side is warm but the freezer is fine. Is that one fault or two?

Usually one. Dual-refrigeration units run a separate evaporator and fan for each compartment, so a fresh-food side drifting warm on its own points at that compartment's evaporator fan, its defrost circuit or an air damper — not at the compressor. It is one of the few symptoms that narrows the search rather than widening it.

How old is too old to repair?

Age on its own decides very little; what decides it is whether the fault is in the sealed system and whether parts for that model are still made. A twenty-year-old cabinet with a failed fan motor or control board is worth repairing. The same cabinet with a leaking evaporator behind foam is a different conversation, and you will get it honestly rather than after the work has started.

Do you cover the whole South Shore?

The four towns listed on this site — Hingham, Cohasset, Norwell, Hull — are the regular round. Call and ask about anywhere adjacent; the answer is either yes or a straight no, never a maybe that turns into a cancelled slot.

What should I have ready when I call?

The model and serial number from the plate — usually inside the fresh food compartment on the upper left wall, or behind the toe grille on a drawer unit — plus what the unit is doing and roughly when it started. Half the diagnosis often happens on that phone call.

The work

Four repairs, and the words people use for them

  • Open lower compartment of a built-in refrigerator showing the compressor and copper lines, with a refrigerant manifold gauge set connected

    Refrigerator Repair

Built-in and integrated Sub-Zero refrigerators on the South Shore, where salt air and closed-in cabinet runs are hard on condensers. We work on dual-refrigeration columns, side-by-sides and under-counter drawers, from sealed-system faults to control boards, fans, gaskets and drain lines.

    • Fresh food side drifting warm while the freezer stays cold
    • Condenser fan running without pause in a boxed-in cabinet run
    • Water pooling under the crisper drawers
    • Door that will not reseal after being opened and shut quickly
    Refrigerator Repair in Hingham
  • Empty white refrigerator cabinet interior with the rear air grille centred on the back wall

    Freezer Repair

Freezer columns, freezer drawers and the freezer half of a built-in pair. Most calls come down to a defrost circuit, a blocked drain, a failed evaporator fan or a gasket that stopped sealing, and each is diagnosed on the unit rather than guessed at from the symptom.

    • Frost sheeting across the back wall of the freezer drawer
    • Ice cream going soft while the display still reads zero
    • Freezer running loudly, then silent for hours at a stretch
    • Meltwater tracking down the front of the cabinet

  • Two hands lifting a clear ice bin full of cubes out of an open stainless under-counter drawer

    Ice Maker Repair

Clear ice makers and in-freezer modules, including the stand-alone under-counter units common in Hingham butler's pantries. Water lines that run through an unheated crawl space or basement are a frequent cause here, alongside fill valves, moulds and ejector faults.

    • Hollow or half-formed cubes coming off the mould
    • Unit filling with water but never ejecting
    • Bin smelling of whatever is open in the refrigerator
    • Production falling behind after a weekend of guests

  • Bottles resting on wooden wine-cabinet racks with a handheld digital thermometer held at the opening

    Wine Cooler Repair

Dual-zone wine storage set into dining rooms, pantries and island runs, where quiet operation matters as much as the temperature. We handle zone temperatures that will not separate, noisy compressors and fans, humidity problems and door seals that sweat.

    • Upper zone sitting several degrees above its setting
    • Compressor cycling audibly under a quiet dining room
    • Condensation forming on the inside of the glass door
    • Bottles warm at the front of the shelf and cold at the back
